This is Tacheles. The history is pretty interesting. Currently it's a squat full of artists in the middle of some of the most expensive real estate in Berlin (though there have been talks of eviction for a while now). I think it's kind of romantic... These next few are all things done by Blu. Check out the last video I've posted here for what I would probably consider the coolest thing I've seen by him.
Berlin has some...er, a lot of great museums with lots of old stuff!
From The Pergamon Museum: The Ishtar Gate and Processional Way An old Roman structure Roman mosaic of Orpheus Greek Stuff! ...like Athena! Another view of the Pergamon Alter...I still don't understand how it's in Berlin! It's a mystery.
From The Altes Museum: Crypt of a Roman General Try to translate this, Classics Majors!
From The Neues Museum: Bust of King Tutankhamun. Thanks for telling me all about him, Mr. Beechtree (Ha, just kidding, everyone thought you were drunk...is this slander? eh, I doubt anyone is paying much attention.). Queen Nefertiti. The Neues Museum also houses what is arguably the most famous bust of Nefertiti, which Wikipedia deems "iconic." We weren't allowed to take pictures of that though...too famous for amateur photographers.
Sorry--most of this stuff is probably pretty boring unless you're actually seeing it with your own eyes, plus most of the photos aren't that great (just blame it on the awful weather conditions! Although, in all fairness, it would probably be equally accurate to blame it on my inability to effectively operate my own camera!). But I promise, it was all very interesting, beautiful, harrowing, etc. (apply these words where appropriate).
I spent the last few days in Berlin, centered around seeing Panda Bear(!) and Pantha Du Prince at Hebbel Am Ufer for "Life Is Live." I stayed here the first night and here the other nights.
After a couple days there, I actually started to feel like I could (almost) find my way around (!!).
It was cold though. Snowy, too (See this photo for evidence!).
Are you waiting for me? At the end of the airport I'm off buying our tickets Auteur in hibernation But I'm feeling impatient We were late for departure
And the smell of pajamas Is what makes me feel frivol There are minutes for sleeping But we didn't have minutes to spare
So you're feeling sleepy Sympathize with the retard Being held by his mother She's got spit in her napkin And she's pushing him that way Like the stench through the men's room
And it's making you nauseous Where the hell have I got to? There's a boy who's a Krishna And he thinks you look pretty Well, he's eyeing your stockings He's got books to help you with your life
But there's no need to worry This is just a vacation It's not permanent leaving Every kid gets excited When his parents are yelling They ordered a Lincoln And they received a compact And there's fat nuns and tenors Who are blocking departure
Till I'm birthed from their vulvas And I kiss you and hug you Do you remember our forfeits? And you shout at the platform
Here we come mister airplane
Please, Please, Please, Please Try, Try, Try To enjoy your roots Have some fun, fun Kids on holiday
I spent the first day of 2010 flying to Topeka, Kansas to visit my dad's 112 year old grandma, Ella Schuler. Over the years I've found ways to mention Ella's awesome longevity in most every conversation I've had so if you're reading this it's likely that you already know all about her. Currently she's the 23rd oldest person in the world.
